Thus, Psalm 77 is an example from Scripture of God's people asking Him, “Why?” – why do we suffer? Why does God not come to our aid when we are faced with adversity? Why did God allow this terrible thing to happen? – has God neglected His responsibilities in our covenantal relationship with Him?

1 I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me. 2 When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands, and I would not be comforted. 3 I remembered you, God, and I groaned; I meditated, and my spirit grew faint. 4 You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak.

The “teaching” of Psalm 78, the teaching to which the faithful should “give ear” (Psalm 78:1), is a teaching of hope in the goodness of God and a warning of the consequences of continual disobedience. God called our ancestors in the faith out of Egypt into a new life of abundance in the land of promise.
